It might be raining in Stockport (probably in Portland, Glasgow, Dunedin and Tokyo too) but in the spooling super 8 of our dreams it’s always a hazy small-town Californian summer. The tarmac outside the thrift store is melting, styrene 45s are warping on the turntable and all your friends have moved to Seattle or LA. Find some shade put an unmarked tape in your Sony Walkman. Press play and maybe it’s music like this, a perfect evocation of 60s/90s guitar pop viewed through a magnifying glass.
Everything is clear, garage guitars, organ drone and soft clear vocals all seen as if for the first time. But it’s not the first time. Usurabi’s first lp for an an’ archives came out a couple of years ago and the band’s pedigree stretches back into the Japan 90s psychedelic heyday. Even so, here it feels like I never heard their genius so clearly before. The songs seem to stretch out, taking unlikely turns and although I can hear any number of references (Tiger Trap, Yo La Tengo, Pastels and on and on) it feels like the first time all over again.
Original, weird, lovely indie music like this doesn’t come round too often. That’s your summer sorted.. (mint / new – with LOTS of inserts)
