Iconic early 80’s release from Seattle outsider Kerry Leimer and his band Savant – who managed just a handful of releases in their short active stint, the highlight being this ‘The Neo-Realist (At Risk)’ via Leimer’s own Palace Of Lights imprint. Heavily influenced by Cage’s principles of chance operations, Leimer reached out to local underground musicians in the area to help him fulfil his vision if loop-driven / chance based electronic composition, namely ambient producer Marc Barreca, John Foster (founder of Op Magazine), Jim & David Keller (New Flamingos) and a range of others on the same wavelength. The result is a 7-track masterpiece that basks in the intersection of post-punk / sound collage and ambient music – driven by looped African percussion, stray baselines, shimmering guitar work and tight drum-machine programming, all brewed in smudged, eccentric atmospheres. The arrangements are bizarre and totally non-confirming, taking obvious influence from the semi-organised, samplemageddon chaos of Byrne & Eno’s ‘My Life In The Bush Of Ghost’, yet the whole thing, even despite its somewhat stuffy and overly theorised approach, remains indisputably funky and loose-limbed throughout.
