Hallucinatory minimalism from Italian enigma Raffael Serra.
Serra’s works have cropped up here sporadically over the past few years, but sightings are few and far between. Kodak Ghost Poems released in 1988 is arguably his best, existing in a dream-like intermediate state of revolving minimalist patters and glassy, shimmering FM synthesis. Serra expresses an admiration for Satie’s principles around Furniture Music and the foundations of ambient music, but there’s a desire to create something warmer and more restless here. Less music as backdrops but music to be utterly within and absorbed by, both infinite and mysterious. A key piece to the endlessly enduring jigsaw of Italian minimalism.
