A dream collaboration between two of the most important figures in the histroy of avant-garde music, with ex Theatre Of Eternal Music / Velvet Underground man John Cale and minimal pioneer Terry Riley. The now legendary trademarks of these musicians permeate the entire release, with the deep, sustained tones and repeating motifs on the EPIC title track ‘Church Of Anthrax’, yet despite being underpinned by techniques considered at the time avant-garde, it all fits within a framework that’s easy to digest and understand. Whilst some moments on this LP stray more into rock territory, it’s ‘The Hall Of Mirrors Palace At Versailles’ remains the most simple and argueably most effect, with Terry’s incredible overdubbed Soprano Sax combing with hard piano chords to carry you away off into the stratosphere. (Sleeve & Vinyl VG++).
