One of the finest examples of IDM-y ambient techno to emerge from the 90’s scene in Japan with Ken Ishii’s ‘Reference To Difference’ LP as Flare. As a whole the Sublime back catalogue is very strong, and sort of the far-east equivalent to the UK’s Peacefrog, with the glassy melodies and soothing downtempo flavours on offer here very likely to tickle the fancy of any disciples of the Stasis, Nuron, Likemind sound. Equally comfortable at home or let loose on (admittedly more clued up) dancefloors, Ishii manages to strike the perfect balance between lush ambient soundscapes and grooving brain-dance rhythm whilst creating a stone-cold classic that still gets a weekly airing at ANF HQ.
