Two killer oddball dubbed-out dancers on Sahko’s sister label
Beneath the severe art-techno sound design of Sahko’s usual output there is another, friendlier but less seen side. Sahko’s PUU sub-label run by dance music surrealist Jimi Tenor has been slow and steady in its output over the last 28 years, responsible for cult records by Freestyle Man, Soft Focus, Brandi Ifgray and Kuusumun Profetta among many others. Their latest sees Nenad Marković, who has released grainy slo-mo fogged out techno on L.I.E.S. and ESP Institute turn up the brightness with two long tracks of warm and weird post-genre machine music. On side A blunt congas support a stepping bassline and bubbling electronics until a ghostly synth line snakes across the ceiling. Side B is underpinned by deep 808 pulses, sharp claps and a watery soulful keyboard hook all topped off with yearning happy/sad pads. This record, like all the best dance music, makes you stretch past your own dance floor experiences to imagine just what the fantasy club would look like where it was a peak time record, and what beings might be dancing to it..
