Meltdown! Esteemed Hungarian artist / composer Tibor Szemzo continues to be a master at work with this new LP Arbo X – Csoma Grooves released by his own and recently revived Fodderbasis imprint. As with almost all of his music, Arbo X was written to accompany a moving picture, more specifically Szmezo’s first full-length film entitled A Guest Of Life, which he directed and composed all the music for entirely. The film focuses on the life of Alexander Csoma De Körös, a Hungarian polyglot / scholar-adventurer who set out on foot looking for the roots of the Hungarian language, eventually arriving into Tibet and dedicating his life to the study of Tibetan manuscripts, it’s culture, language and religion. Whether we’ll actually ever be able to see this film is questionable, but the music also works as a stand alone – Tibor’s unmistakable brand of ambient / jazz expressionism with subtle flourishes of contemporary classic feels as vivid and rich as it does on early all-time masterpieces ‘Snapshot From The Island’ and ‘Private Exits’. The album is credited to his performance ensemble Gordian Knot Company, who work together to articulate moments of cinematic suspense, Tibor’s trademark icy flute stabs slice through the minimal orchestral arrangements, linking east / west jazz nodes and layering Tibetian dialogue, recalling Elaine Radigue’s Songs Of Milarepa epic. It’s a perfectly balanced and cohesive display from one of the European avant-garde most tireless artists who continues to amaze..(Mint / New)
