Atmospheric and inventive electronic improvisation from the Studio Pankow trio released in the mid-00’s IDM dark ages and still unfairly overlooked. Cherished by those who know, Studio Pankow’s only release was born out of a series of studio jams between David Moufang (aka Move D and so much other stuff), Jamie Hodge (Conjoint / Born Under A Rhyming Planet ++) and lesser know Kai Kroker. The origins though are surprising though – it’s clear each artist is established within their craft. Anchored by the pulse of minimal techno, the group float between dubbed, glitchy, velvet-noir atmospherics imbued with a green-hazed, hunkered down feel that comes from red-eyed nights in the studio. ‘Seimensdamm’ has definite nods to the clicks ’n cuts aesthetic of the times, ‘Neukoelln’ switches into beautiful warm early-hours chords and ‘Ruhleben’ oscillates around muffled bass tones and pointillistic percussion with a sense of heavily stoned concentration. But it’s hard to pick any favourite here – end to end brilliance – and still surprised it’s evaded the endless reissue carousel. Shop fav! (NM/NM)
