Without a doubt one of the high points of the late 20th-Century American avant-garde – the Lovely Music catalogue contains some of the most purely enjoyable art music ever created. At its core is the work of composer and educator Robert Ashley. Originally composed to fit the US television sitcom format, his 1978 LP ‘Private Parts’ is a soothing, mystical and time-dissolving epic of transcendent, flowing spoken word, accompanied by Blue Gene Tyranny, whose piano shifts across restless tabla and dreamtime synths. Ashley takes on the role of a louche but dislocated raconteur who ‘forgets to combine talk with thinking, and just thinks, or just talks’. Perfect music that goes everywhere and nowhere, all at once.
