Warm and witty machine music, ignored on release, seeks second life..
The recent past is a foreign country, they do things differently there. How and why a record as beguiling and inventive as this can have been seemingly totally passed over is one of those enduring mysteries that keep the hope of further discoveries alive. Released in 2003 Pascal Schafer’s Melody Express is the first of his two records for the excellent Karaoke Kalk label form Berlin. It’s a constantly surprising mini-LP of warm and quirky post-minimal music for listening and dancing. Melody Express is one of those records that appear round the margins of the larger shifts history of dance music production. Check the standout ‘Telemusic’ caught between the precise detail of the clicks-and-cuts moment and the resugent influence of a more soulful American approach. But, there is something else here too – a kind of goofy charm. Its full of the kind of off-kilter moments that only happen when dance music is made by people who aren’t firmly locked into its tropes and traditions. The slightly silly but glorious title track, for instance, recalls a spaced-out Telex or a what might have happened if there had been a creche at Kling Klang studios. How did we miss this?
