WOW.. Horn Of Plenty link up with Berlin-based musician David ‘Nein’ Rodere for this humble, super-short run tape in advance of a much-anticipated LP coming.. at some point, who knows when. I dunno if many people even clocked it but David’s self-released and extremely unassuming ‘Catch Up With Social’ tape last year was definitely a personal fav – ‘For Unprepared Voice And Guitar’ finds him in a similarly loose and stripped-bare mood, with four impulsive pieces recorded straight into iPhone. It sorta catches the moments between songs, feeling out ideas and seeing where they go – the standout being ‘Bristle City’ that just hovers around the same 2 note guitar pick, feeling out the mood and riffing over the top until, as David so perfectly puts it, ‘the song collapses in on itself’. Elsewhere, the songs drift between the natural ambience of the city, traffics and police sirens go by and form a natural accompaniment to the home-made music, recalling the collagey bits from Astrid Øster Mortensen’s screamer on Forlag For Fri Music earlier this year, whilst the scrappy outsider guitar anti-song of ‘Police Problem’ sits closer to the unsung genius of Daisuke Tobari’s avant-folk epic ‘Guitar’.
