The big one. Une Éclipse Totale De Soleil from intrepid French autodidact Ghédalia Tazartès remains one of the most singular works within the realms of the avant-garde . There really is nothing that can prepare you for the work of Tazartès – his feral style across these two 17 minute pieces is a confronting and immersive mix of tape music scraps, ritualistic vocal acrobatics, spliced Middle Eastern music and crude electronics, often collided and collaged together to given a vision of a fragmented, disjointed Europe. Fully exposed and often vulnerable, its hard to think of any prior music that could have influenced Tazartès – instead he channels his nomadic roots and sense of displacement into a wandering, untethered montage of musical alchemy that would later leave lasting smears of inspiration in noise, industrial and much of experimental music thereafter. Not an easy ride but a crucial node for anyone journeying into the outer reaches of challenging music but unfortunately now super rare after the Celluloid factory flood.. (NM/VG++)
